Patients receiving acupuncture for the first time often worry about their reaction to the needling experience. In practice, however, acupuncture is rarely painful. Acupuncture needles are very fine and far removed from hypodermic needles. The sensations felt range from a dull ache to tingling which can be felt at the entry points or along the acupuncture channel/s.
Many patients report feeling deeply relaxed both during and after their treatment. This deeply relaxed state can make you feel a little light-headed after treatment so it is important to rest for a short while after the session before resuming with your day's activities.
Adjunct techniques and therapies are often used alongside acupuncture depending on the nature of your presenting condition. Electro-acupuncture may be used to provide stronger stimulation to the needles or you may receive moxibustion and / or cupping therapy.
